More from Mumford
Maybe I'm a narcissist. But I read a book about America's Gilded Age (
The Brown Decades) and it reminded me uncannily of my own, the present day. What did I see when I was there? Passages such as:
Conjure up the sordid parade of cut-throats, business gamblers, political mercenaries, short-sighted industrialists, sporting dandies, and demagogic religious preachers who claimed the spotlight during this period.
Or again:
The conception that each man had a legal right to do as he would with his own far outbalanced any sense of the common weal.
