Mike   Applestein will be widely recognized for having posted the now-definitive piece on xex. What's also noteworthy however is the astonishing degree to which interview seems to capture a very particular historical moment and geographical place. Maybe it's the terrific eye for detail (Patrix, Consolata Missions, the Golden Spike, etc.) that lends the same evocative if not wistful feel characteristic of a lot of Mike's writing.
