An hour or so after finding this obituary, while cleaning out a stack of old paper, I stumbled onto a summer 2004 interview with Barbara Guest. She said:

I deliberately did not read Surrealist literature or study the history of the movement, because I wanted to be sure to have my own Surrealism.

The statement implicitly contains the wise advice of one who has gone before us, advising us of the wisdom where appropropriate of ignoring the wise advice of those who have gone before us.
